Pilots have a legal and moral duty to ensure that any flight can be made safely. Even if you only plan some ridge-soaring at your local site, you should be aware of any local airspace restrictions. If you plan to croos-country you should be familiar with airlaw, airspace and aeronauticals charts. Whenever you fly you should call Freefone 0500 354802 to check on Royal flights, Red Arrows displays and other Temporary Restruicted Airspace (RA[T]). You should also check the NOTAMs for any activities that may affect your flight. Clubs and individuals can subscribe to to a NOTAM service or you can use the web to access all the current NOTAMs for your proposed route at www.ais.org.uk [Username: BHPAuser, password: password]. Additionaly if you are flying on a mid-week day and five or more gliders are likely to besharing the site, then use Freefone 0800 515544 for Civil Aircraft Notification Procedure [CANP]. This way military aircrew can be advised of your presence at a site and can plan their sorties appropriately. This phone call should be made at least 4 hours before your earliest intended take-off timeto allow the aircrew to have the information when they are planning their flights. details of how to use the CANP service can be found at www.bhpa.co.uk/news/notices.canp.php. More information on mid-week flying can be found here . |
